Project Activity

Update November 2011

EirGrid have been developing the most appropriate route for this project over the past two years. The Phase 2 Lead Consultants Report will be available on our website, at our open days and on request from Monday 7th November 2011. The map showing the proposed line can be found here: Mullingar Kinnegad 110 kV Indicative Route Alignment

The preferred indicative overhead line route and accompanying information will be available to the public to view between the 7th November and 25th of November 2011 at:

  •  Westmeath County Council, County Buildings, Mount Street, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath

EirGrid will host two Public Information days where the proposed indicative route alignment will be on display and members of the public will have an opportunity to express their opinions regarding the proposed route alignment. You are welcome to attend these Public Information days, details of which are outlined below:

  • Mullingar Park Hotel, Dublin Road, Mullingar Co. Westmeath

Opening Hours:    Wednesday 9th November 2011      11am - 8pm

                             Thursday 10th November 2011       11am - 8pm

It is vital that this new electricity infrastructure is built to ensure that the region meets the standards required for a safe and secure electricity system. This new 110 kV line will secure the electricity supply to Mullingar and the surrounding areas. The project will also place the electricity transmission infrastructure in the town on a par with towns of a similar size across the country.

As part of this public engagement process, every effort will be made to ensure that your input into this project is considered prior to an application for planning approval being made to An Bord Pleanála. With this in mind EirGrid request that as much information as possible is provided when making a submission to ensure that informed decisions can be made with respect to this project.

Closing date for submissions is the 25th November 2011 and submissions should be made using the contact information below. In the meantime, should you wish to discuss the project in further detail, please feel free to contact the project team.

Update July 2011

EirGrid and our consultants are continuing to work on identifying the preferred route alignment of the new power line within the identified corridor. EirGrid are beginning the first stage of the following consultation which will be carried out over the coming months prior to submission of the planning application;

1 - Landowner engagement on indicative route alignments

2 - Public consultation on indicative route alignment

3 - Announcement of preferred alignment

Following the announcement of the preferred route alignment, a planning application for the project will be submitted to an Bord Pleanála.

Update May 2011

EirGrid have received a number of submissions from the public since the last phase of public consultation on the project. We are continuing to work on identifying the preferred power line route within the 1 km corridor. The final alignment will be made public during June/July 2011.

Update March 2011 (2)

We have been working on identifying the preferred route corridor since the last public consultation open day in November 2010.

The preferred route corridor which is 1km wide has now been identified as 5A, and is illustrated on the Preferred Route Corridor map. The proposed power line design will be within this corridor. The other route corridors 1A, 1B, 2, 3, 4 and 5B as well as the underground cable routes 1, 2 and 3 are no longer under consideration.

A public information day will also take place in the Annebrook House Hotel on 6th April 2011 between 11.00am and 8.00pm. Closing date for Public Commentary on the route corridor will be 29th April 2011. All our Consultation documents will be available on our this website from Wednesday 6th April 2011.

Update March 2011 (1)

Work is still ongoing in order to select a suitable route corridor. We expect this to be completed soon and the final route corridor will be announced in March 2011  following which a  public consultation day will be held in Mullingar. This will be an opportunity for interested people to look at maps, and get more information around the project.  At this stage EirGrid are only considering  the route corridors 4, 5A and 5B which extend from the existing Mullingar 110kV station to the existing Kinnegad 110 kV station. Route Corridors 1A, 1B, 2 and 3 are no longer being considered.
Please keep an eye on your local papers and this website for information regarding the time and date of the open day

Update February 2011

Work is still ongoing in order to select a suitable route Corridor. We expect this to be completed soon and the final route corridor will then be announced during February 2011.

Update November 2010

The first phase of public consultation for this proposed development has now been completed. This was aimed at identifying constraints within the project study area.

A copy of the newspaper notice can be seen here: Newspaper Notice 1

A map of the study area is shown here: Map of Study Area

Since then, potential route corridors and an emerging preferred route corridor have been identified by our consultants. A map showing the consultant's emerging preferred route corridor, marked as Route Corridor 5B on the Overhead Line Route Corridor Map, can be found below:
