About EirGrid
EirGrid is the state owned independent Transmission System Operator (TSO) and Market Operator (MO) in Ireland. It is EirGrid's role to deliver quality connection, transmission, and market services to electricity generators, suppliers and customers utilising the high voltage electricity system.
In this capacity, it is proposing a new 220/110 kV electrical substation. The new 220/110 kV substation will connect into the existing 220 kV transmission line which runs from Tarbert, Co. Kerry to Clashavoon, Co. Cork. To connect the proposed new 220/110 kV substation to the existing Garrow 110 kV substation, two new 110 kV circuits will be required between both substations.
Justification
The proposed development is required to remedy identified transmission network problems in the South West.
Facilitate the Connection of Renewable Generation
There is a significant amount of renewable generation connected or seeking to connect in the South West. The existing 110 kV transmission network will not be able to accommodate the amount of wind generation planned for the area. The new 220/110 kV substation will allow the region to utilise its rich renewable energy resources.
Security of supply
By utilising our rich renewable energy resources, security of supply to the region will be increased.
It is vital that new electricity infrastructure is built to ensure that the region meets the standards required of a safe and secure electricity system.
