Overview

About the Project

EirGrid is the state owned independent Transmission System Operator (TSO) and Market Operator (MO) in Ireland. It is EirGrid's role to deliver quality connection, transmission, and market services to electricity generators, suppliers and customers utilising the high voltage electricity system.

In this capacity, EirGrid is proposing a new 220/110 kV substation which will connect into the existing 220 kV transmission line which runs from Tarbert, Co. Kerry to Clashavoon, Co. Cork, a new 110 kV circuit will be required to connect the proposed new 220/110 kV substation to the planned Cordal 110 kV substation and a new 110 kV circuit will be required to connect the proposed new 220/110 kV substation to either the planned Knockacummer 110 kV substation or the existing Glenlara 110 kV substation.

Please see the Project Activity section for updates on this project.

Justification

Facilitate Connection of Renewable Generation

There is a significant amount of renewable generation connected or seeking to connect in South West Cork. The current transmission network configuration and capacity is not capable of accommodating the connection of this amount of renewable generation.

It is vital that this new electricity infrastructure is built to ensure that the region meets the standards required for a safe and secure electricity system and to utilise the South West region’s abundant renewable energy resources.
