Donegal 110kV

What is the Donegal 110kV project?

The Donegal 110kV project is being jointly developed by ESB Networks and EirGrid, as it consists of both a transmission and a distribution line. The project was given planning permission in October 2009. You can review the planning application here. The new lines will follow a Y- shaped path from the south of the county near Binbane to a switching station at Glenties. From there the line will split to serve Letterkenny and Derrybeg in the North West of the county. Map of Donegal 110kV Project

Why is it needed?

There is an urgent need for 110kV reinforcement of the Network in County Donegal. This project is primarily a reinforcement project. The demand for electricity in County Donegal has grown significantly over the past fifteen years. There is a risk that the quality of electricity supply will fall below acceptable standards. The problems can be outlined as follows;

• At Derrybeg and Gweedore voltage decay due to growth is reaching critical levels, which will result in inability to connect new customers
• Killybegs and Kilcar have inadequate capacity for present and future needs
• Capacity and reliability of the transmission system in Letterkenny and East Donegal
• Improves reliability of electricity supply in Donegal
• Facilitates connecting renewables in the area into the power system.
