East-West Interconnector. This project will: enhance security of supply, facilitate increased competition, assist growth in renewable energy, enable direct access to the larger UK market.

Overview

EirGrid's role as the independent transmission system operator is to deliver quality connection, transmission and market services to generators, suppliers and customers utilising the high voltage electricity system. Part of this responsibility requires putting in place the electricity infrastructure required to support the development of Ireland's economy.

Over the next three years, two new privately built and operated power plants will be completed in the Aghada area. To facilitate their connection to the electricity system certain infrastructure projects are necessary in the Cork harbour Area.

1. Connection of Generators to the National Transmission System:

  • Connection of the ESB Long Point Power Station to the National Grid (Transmission System).
  • Connection of the Bord Gais Glanagow Power Station to the National Grid.

Once completed in 2011 approximately 25% of Ireland’s generation capacity shall come from the Cork Harbour Area.

2. The construction and completion of two circuits:

  • Installation of the 6km of land and sea cable between Cow Cross and Aghada.
  • Installation of the 8km of land and sea cable between Glanagow and Raffeen.

The new circuit across the main channel of Cork Harbour coupled with completion of the Aghada Raffeen circuit will provide security of supply and access to high quality bulk power to the Munster region.
