Update on Public Consultation May 2011

We had a great response from members of the public who attended the third public information day of the Dunmanway Clashavoon project in Macroom on the 9th of May.

The open day took place at the Castle Arms Hotel in Macroom between 10.30am and 8pm and was advertised widely on radio, in local newspapers, and through an extensive letter drop.

We have received much information and queries which we are currently processing. A summary of the information and submissions gathered will be published on this website shortly.

Responses to questions from the local community group can be viewed in the Frequently Asked Questions section of our website.

Steps of the Proposed Project

The process for submitting a planning application for the proposed Clashavoon Dunmanway Project has been divided into four key phases as follows:

Phase Description Status
Phase 1  Information Gathering Complete
Phase 2 Route Corridor Evaluation On-going
Phase 3 Preliminary Line Route Design Estimated July/August 2011
Phase 4 Application Submission Estimated End 2011
Phase 5   Construction Estimated 2013-2014

Full information on the process for submitting the planning application on this project can be viewed here: Project Roadmap

Phase 1 - Information Gathering

In the initial phase (Phase 1 – Information Gathering) of this project, information regarding the study area1 for the proposed electricity project was gathered.

This information was obtained in many ways, through environmental studies, information from the general public, aerial photography and site visits.

A public open day was held on 29th and 30th June 2010 in the Castle Hotel, Macroom. Members of the public were invited to view the study area and provide submissions, comments, information or queries in relation to the study area.

A copy of the newspaper notice can be viewed here: Clashavoon Newspaper Notice 1

A map of the study area can be viewed here: Map of Study Area

A copy of the initial briefing document can viewed here: Initial Briefing Document

Following on from the open day, several criteria & inputs were taken into account when selecting the route corridor2 options for this project. Further information on these criteria and inputs were included in the Phase 1 Briefing Document which can be viewed here: Phase 1 Briefing Document

The feasible route corridor options were analysed in detail and a map was produced showing the route corridor options. This map also identified the emerging preferred route corridor3.

A map of the route corridors options can be viewed here: Route Corridor Map

For a more detailed explanation as to how these route corridor options were chosen, a copy of the Phase 1 Corridor Identification Report can be viewed here: Phase 1 Corridor Identification Report.

A second public information day was then held in the Castle Hotel, Macroom on Wednesday 13th October between 2.00pm and 8.00pm.  Members of the public were invited to view the route corridor options map and provide submissions, comments, information or queries in relation to the route corridor options.

A period of four weeks was allowed for the public to make submissions, after which the project moved to Phase 2.

A copy of the newspaper notice that was published in the Irish Examiner, Southern Star and Corkman can be viewed here: Clashavoon Newspaper Notice 2

Phase 2 - Route Corridor Evaluation

In Phase 2 a detailed evaluation was carried out on the route corridor options incorporating the feedback from Phase 1. A preferred route corridor was identified after this evaluation.

A Briefing Document was prepared with full information on key criteria and inputs used in the Phase 2 evaluations, along with a map which indicates the preferred route corridor. The Phase 2 Briefing Document can be viewed here: Phase 2 Briefing Document

Following the identification of a preferred route corridor, an indicative line route has now been identified within the preferred corridor.

The next step is to meet with landowners and conduct surveys along the indicative line route. Landowners can highlight any concerns or comments on the indicative line route at the survey stage.

A report on Phase 2 can be viewed above. The report contains a detailed explanation on how the preferred route corridor and indicative line route were selected.

1 Study Area:
A broad geographical area within which one would expect to find a number of route corridor options

2 Route Corridors:
An identified strip of land 500 metres wide where a line could be located

3 Emerging Preferred Route Corridor:
The consultants route corridor preference based on their initial assessment of the route corridor options prior to public consultation.
