About EirGrid
EirGrid plc operates Ireland’s national electricity grid (also called the ‘Transmission System’).
EirGrid was created in July 2006 when the operations of the national grid were passed to us from ESB. We are not part of ESB. EirGrid is an independent, state-owned company.
Our role
EirGrid has several roles. Among our most important are:
- To operate a safe, reliable, economical and efficient national electricity grid.
- To plan and develop the grid infrastructure needed to support Ireland's economy.
- To supervise the security of the national grid.
- To schedule electricity generation with power generators and stations.
- To facilitate the market for renewable electricity in Ireland.
The national electricity grid
The electricity grid managed by EirGrid encompasses 6,500 kilometres (km) of powerlines. The most important of these include:
- 400 Kilovolt (kV) powerlines.
- 220 Kilovolt (kV) powerlines.
- 110 Kilovolt (kV) powerlines.
